Pregnancy Due Date Calculator: Estimate Your Baby’s Arrival

Use our Pregnancy Due Date Calculator (Naegele’s Rule) to estimate your baby’s due date from your last menstrual period (LMP) and cycle length. Learn gestational age, fetal age, trimesters, and key milestones.

Becoming pregnant is one of life’s most exciting journeys. One of the first questions expectant parents ask is: “When is my baby due?” Our Pregnancy Due Date Calculator (above) uses Naegele’s Rule to estimate your baby’s arrival based on the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) and your average cycle length.

🍼 What Is a Due Date?

Your estimated due date (EDD) is the day your baby is most likely to be born. A full-term pregnancy is about 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of your LMP. Only around 5% of babies arrive exactly on their due date—most are born between 37 and 42 weeks.

📅 How the Calculator Works

Naegele’s Rule:

  • Start with the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP).
  • Add 280 days (40 weeks).
  • Adjust for cycle length (if longer or shorter than 28 days).

Example: If your LMP was 1 January and your cycle is 28 days, your EDD is roughly 8 October.

👶 Gestational Age vs. Fetal Age

  • Gestational Age (GA): Weeks since the first day of your LMP—used for clinical milestones.
  • Fetal Age: The baby’s actual age, typically about two weeks less than GA (ovulation ≈ day 14).

Our calculator displays GA and an approximate fetal age so you have both views.

📖 Why Knowing Your Due Date Matters

  • 🩺 Medical care: Plans ultrasounds, prenatal visits, and tests.
  • 🍎 Lifestyle: Helps optimize nutrition, rest, and activity.
  • 🍼 Preparation: Guides birth planning and baby essentials.

📊 Pregnancy Timeline by Trimester

First Trimester (Weeks 1–12)

  • Baby’s heart begins to beat.
  • Morning sickness and fatigue are common.

Second Trimester (Weeks 13–27)

  • You may feel the first kicks.
  • Detailed anatomy scan around week 20.

Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40)

  • Baby gains weight rapidly.
  • Final preparations for birth.

🤔 Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is a due date calculator?

It’s an estimate. First-trimester ultrasounds may refine the date, but most babies don’t arrive exactly on the predicted day.

What if my cycles are irregular?

Use your best average. If your cycle varies widely, your clinician may adjust the date using an early ultrasound.

Can my baby come before or after the due date?

Yes—most births occur between 37 and 42 weeks. Before 37 weeks is preterm; after 42 weeks is post-term.

Should I use LMP or ovulation date?

If you precisely tracked ovulation, that may be more accurate. Otherwise, LMP is the standard clinical method.
